The Brahmaputra River, one of the mightiest rivers in India, flows across Assam and plays a crucial role in the region's connectivity and development. Due to its vast width and strong currents, building bridges over the Brahmaputra has always been an engineering challenge and a strategic necessity.
As of 2025, there are a total of 10 bridges (completed and under construction) over the Brahmaputra River in Assam:
Completed Bridges:
-
Saraighat Bridge (1962) – The first rail-cum-road bridge near Guwahati.
-
Naranarayan Setu (1998) – Rail-cum-road bridge at Jogighopa.
-
Kolia Bhomora Setu (1987) – Near Tezpur, for road transport.
-
Bogibeel Bridge (2018) – India’s longest rail-cum-road bridge near Dibrugarh.
-
Dhola–Sadiya Bridge (Bhupen Hazarika Setu, 2017) – India’s longest road bridge.
Under-Construction Bridges:
-
North Guwahati to Guwahati bridge – A new 6-lane bridge parallel to Saraighat.
-
Jorhat–Majuli bridge – Connecting river island Majuli with the mainland.
-
Tezpur to Silghat bridge – For better inter-district connectivity.
-
Gohpur to Numaligarh bridge – Part of enhanced highway connectivity.
-
Goalpara–Pancharatna bridge – To boost access in lower Assam.
These bridges are lifelines that connect Assam’s remote regions with major cities, enhancing transportation, trade, healthcare access, and emergency services. The Government of India and the Assam state authorities are actively pushing such infrastructure projects to bring economic growth and regional integration to the Northeast.
