In Which Year Was The Capital Of Assam Shifted From Shillong To Dispur?

The capital of Assam was officially shifted from Shillong to Dispur in 1973.

Originally, Shillong served as the capital of the undivided state of Assam. However, with the formation of the new state of Meghalaya in 1972, Shillong became the capital of Meghalaya. As a result, Assam needed a new capital within its new geographical boundaries.

Dispur, a small locality on the outskirts of Guwahati, was chosen and officially declared as the capital of Assam in 1973. Though relatively small, Dispur hosts the Assam Secretariat, State Legislative Assembly, and key administrative offices.

Quick Fact: Dispur remains the capital of Assam, but Guwahati continues to function as the state's largest city and main commercial hub.
