This historic event occurred in Digboi, a small town located in the Tinsukia district of Assam. Digboi is famously known as Asia’s first oil town, and it houses one of the world’s oldest operational oil refineries.
The discovery of oil in Assam marked the beginning of India’s petroleum industry. The British engineers and geologists noticed oil seepage in the area during railway construction, which led to the establishment of the first oil well.
Quick Fact: The phrase "Dig, boy! Dig!" is believed to have inspired the name “Digboi” during the British era, referring to workers drilling for oil.
