Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary

Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary
Covering an area of 26.22 sq kms and situated on the foothills of Himalayas, Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary was affirmed a wildlife sanctuary in 1980 by the Govt of Assam particularly for the safety of the Hispid Hare and world rarest smallest wild pig Pigmy Hog. Wedged between the Himalayas and Bhutan Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Darrang District.

Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary is one of those national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in Assam for which the state is so famous. Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary is considered as one of the important protected areas in Assam for the protection of primate diversity.


Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary is a safe haven for endangered species like Hispid Hare and Pigmy Hog. The main attraction of the sanctuary are Capped Langur, Pigmy Hog, Porcupine, Bison, Hispid Hare, Pangolin, Tiger, Asiatic Elephant, Leopard etc.

Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary is one of those many national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in Assam that constitute of the major portion of the Assam tourism. A lion's share of the tourism revenue of the Government of Assam come from the national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in Assam only.

The Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary, Assam, is reach in mammal animals. The special attraction of the Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary, Assam, is the Pigmy Hog and the Hispid Hare, which have won this place an international fame. You can also expect to see Elephant, Gaur, Tiger, Leopard, Small Indian Civet, Jungle Cat, Chinese Pangolin, Porcupine, Himalayan Black Bear, Barking Deer, Wild Pig and more over here. If you are a bird watcher and love to watch birds, you will be absolutely delighted to find a wide number of two winged inhabitants of this forest here including Peafowl, Hornbill, Swamp partridge, Bengal florican and so on.

Best season to visit Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary : From November to April.

How to reach Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary : The nearest Airport LGBI, Guwahati is about 150 kms. away. The Sanctuary is located 70 kms. from Mangaldoi, about 120 kms. from Tezpur and 140 kms. from Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park .

Visitors may stay in Hotels at Guwahati and Circuit Houses at Mangaldoi and Udalguri.

There is exactly no hotel, tourist lodge and holiday home right near the Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary but if you do not find an accommodation in the Circuit Houses mentioned above, you can choose to stay at Guwahati. Guwahati, as we know, is the capital of the state of Assam so there are lots of lots of hotels and holiday homes in Guwahati. It is about 150 kilometres from the Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary. The distance of Tezpur from the Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary is about 130 kilometres which is again the administrative headquarters of the Sonitpur district of Assam. So you can accommodate yourself easily in Sonitpur as well.
