Considered to be one of the outcomes of the Assam Accord the establishment of Tezpur University is came along with the establishment of Assam University and Indian Institute of Technology(IIT) Guwahati. Tezpur University was established, by an Act of Parliament, in 1994. The then Prime Minister of India, P. V. Narasimha Rao chaired the opening of the University. Initially, the University operated from the premises of the Darrang College, in Tezpur. Land was acquired at Napaam, a suburb of Tezpur, about 15 kilometers east, of 242 acres (0.98 square kilo-meters), and the premises shifted. |
The objectives of Tezpur University are:
A) It shall strive to offer employment oriented and inter-disciplinary courses, mostly, at postgraduate level to meet local, regional aspirations and development needs of the State of Assam
B) It shall offer courses and promote research in areas which are of special relevance to the region and in emerging areas in science and technology
C) Shall promote national integration and study of rich cultural heritage of the region and, in particular, the diverse ethnic, linguistic and tribal cultures of the State
D) It shall utilize "distance education techniques" to provide access to higher education for large segments of the population, the disadvantaged groups living in remote and rural areas
E) It shall upgrade the professional knowledge and skills of in service personnel for life-long learning.
It is the first university in India to offer the course Master of Technology in Computational Seismology and also one of the few universities in India to have its own Department of Energy. The Department of Electronics at Tezpur University is the first of its kind in India to introduce an interdisciplinary Master of Technology program in Bioelectronics. The first class graduated in June 2006. The university offers various undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs in following academic divisions:

4) School of Engineering
North East Regional Center of Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) was set up at Tezpur University. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee inaugurating the fourth center of ISI at Tezpur University campus on 22nd July 2011 which is the fourth center of ISI.

A) National Highway No. 31 via Jalukbari upto Baihata Chariali and NH 52 from Baihata Chariali via Mangaldoi. Distance : 181 kms
B) National Highway No. 37 via Nagaon upto Kaliabor Tiniali and NH 37A from Kaliabor Tiniali via Kolia Bhomora bridge. Distance : 198 kms.

Regular Bus service are available from Guwahati (ISBT/Machkhowa) to Tezpur ASTC Bus Station via Nagaon or Mangaldoi. To reach Tezpur University, University Bus Services are available from Tezpur ASTC Bus Station via Dolabari to University Campus in scheduled time. Besides University Bus Service, Taxis are available from Tezpur Town (Near ASTC Bus Station) or Mission Chariali and Private Bus from Tezpur Town (Near Idgah Maidan) to reach University
By Air :
Direct Alliance Air flights to Tezpur from Kolkata are available on Thursdays and Sundays. But daily flights are available from/to Guwahati to/from other big cities. Flight Schedule (Currently no flight service from/to Tezpur due to upgradation of Salonibari Air Port, Tezpur )
By Rail :
Tezpur is connected by Metre Gauge line from Tezpur Rail Station to Rangia Junction via Rangapara Junction. Nearest main rail hub is Guwahati which is well connected by different Trains from other important places.
